Minelab Vanquish 360

The Vanquish 360 is the most straightforward detector in Minelab’s current Vanquish range. It uses Multi-IQ simultaneous multi-frequency technology, allowing it to search across multiple frequencies without requiring the user to choose one.

Park, Beach and All Metal modes keep the controls simple, while 119 Target IDs provide considerably more target information than many entry-level detectors. It is fully waterproof to five metres and includes a rechargeable battery, pinpoint mode and V10X coil.

Its main limitations are its six discrimination segments, five sensitivity levels, fixed Iron Bias and lack of wireless audio. However, it remains a strong choice for a beginner who wants simple controls and reliable performance on fields, parks and beaches.

Minelab Vanquish 460

The Vanquish 460 builds on the 360 by adding Field mode, a customisable User Profile and considerably greater adjustment. It provides 10 sensitivity levels, 30 discrimination segments and three adjustable Iron Bias levels.

A red backlit display, built-in flashlight and handgrip vibration make it better suited to different detecting conditions. Bluetooth LE Audio allows compatible low-latency wireless headphones to be connected, while wired headphones are also supplied with the standard package.

The 460 uses the same V10X coil as the Vanquish 360, making it manoeuvrable and well suited to fields, parks, beaches and sites containing closely spaced targets.

Minelab X-Terra Pro

The X-Terra Pro is different from most of the other machines in this comparison because it is not a simultaneous multi-frequency detector. Its PRO-SWITCH technology allows the user to select 5, 8, 10 or 15 kHz, depending on the target and conditions.

It offers Park, Field and Beach modes, with two profiles for each. Adjustable ground balance, recovery speed, Iron Bias and detailed audio controls give it considerably more flexibility than a basic beginner detector.

Minelab Vanquish 560

The Vanquish 560 is the most advanced detector in the Vanquish 60 Series. It combines simple Multi-IQ operation with a larger V12X coil, five target tones and four levels of Iron Bias.

Minelab X-Terra Elite

The X-Terra Elite combines the construction and controls of the X-Terra Pro with Multi-IQ simultaneous multi-frequency technology. This makes it a more versatile all-terrain detector, particularly for those who regularly move between inland sites and saltwater beaches.

Minelab Equinox 700

The Equinox 700 is a lightweight, advanced all-terrain detector with Multi-IQ and four selectable single frequencies: 4, 5, 10 and 15 kHz.

It offers Park, Field and Beach modes, with two profiles for each. Compared with the X-Terra Elite, the Equinox 700 has a lighter carbon-fibre shaft, a more compact collapsed length and Equinox-specific detection and coil technology.

Minelab Equinox 900

The Equinox 900 provides more adjustment and versatility than the Equinox 700. It adds a dedicated Gold mode and offers six selectable single frequencies: 4, 5, 10, 15, 20 and 40 kHz.

Its recovery speed can be adjusted from 1 to 8, providing finer control over the balance between depth and target separation. It also has a wider sensitivity range, more advanced tone adjustment and a configurable shortcut button.

Minelab Manticore

The Manticore is Minelab’s flagship all-terrain metal detector. It uses Multi-IQ+ technology and provides more power, faster target response and more detailed target analysis than the other machines in the range.

Its colour display features a two-dimensional Target Identification Map, showing both conductive and ferrous characteristics. This provides information that cannot be displayed by a conventional Target ID number alone, although the final decision to dig should never be based solely on the display.

Vanquish or X-Terra?

Choose a Vanquish if you want straightforward Multi-IQ performance with relatively simple controls. The Vanquish 360 is the easiest to use, while the 460 adds greater adjustment and wireless audio. The Vanquish 560 provides the best audio and coil package in the range.

Choose the X-Terra Pro if you prefer selectable single frequencies and greater control over the detector’s settings. Choose the X-Terra Elite if you want similar adjustment combined with Multi-IQ simultaneous multi-frequency technology.

X-Terra Elite or Equinox 700?

Both use Multi-IQ and are fully waterproof to five metres. The X-Terra Elite provides excellent all-round performance at a lower price, while the Equinox 700 has a lighter carbon-fibre shaft, selectable single frequencies and the more advanced Equinox platform.

For occasional and intermediate detecting, the X-Terra Elite offers strong value. For frequent use and more demanding sites, the Equinox 700 provides a worthwhile step up.

Equinox 700 or Equinox 900?

The Equinox 700 covers the needs of most inland and beach detectorists. The Equinox 900 adds Gold mode, higher selectable frequencies, more recovery-speed settings, greater sensitivity adjustment and more advanced controls.

The Equinox 900 also includes an additional six-inch coil. This makes it the stronger choice for experienced users and contaminated sites, while the Equinox 700 remains an excellent option for those who do not need the additional settings.

Equinox 900 or Manticore?

The Equinox 900 is an advanced detector with excellent target separation and a broad range of controls. The Manticore goes further by adding Multi-IQ+, more powerful detection, a colour screen, two-dimensional target information and custom Ferrous Limits.

The Manticore offers Minelab’s most advanced performance, but it also requires a larger investment and rewards users who take time to understand its settings. The Equinox 900 may be the more practical choice for detectorists who want advanced performance without needing the Manticore’s full target-analysis system.

Nokta FINDX Pro

The FINDX Pro is a straightforward detector developed primarily for beginners. It operates at 15 kHz and includes four automatic search modes: Field, Park, Beach and Jewellery.

Its simple menu, five sensitivity levels and three target tones allow a new user to start detecting without learning numerous settings. The Target ID scale runs from 0 to 99, providing more information about a detected object before digging.

Unlike the standard FINDX, the FINDX Pro is fully waterproof to five metres. Its standard package also includes an 11-inch coil, wired headphones, a carrying bag and a digging tool, providing most of the basic equipment needed to get started.

The FINDX Pro does not provide wireless audio or the more advanced ground and audio controls found on the Simplex range. However, it remains a practical option for beginners who value easy operation and a complete package.

Best for: Beginners wanting a simple and complete starter package.

Nokta Simplex Lite

The Simplex Lite is the most accessible detector in the current Simplex range. It operates at 15 kHz and includes Field, Park, Beach and All Metal modes.

Compared with the FINDX Pro, the Simplex Lite provides considerably more sensitivity adjustment, with 30 available levels. It also includes automatic and manual ground balance, frequency shift, Ground Suppressor, notch discrimination, vibration and online firmware updates.

Its smaller SX24 9.5 × 6-inch coil is easy to manoeuvre and performs well in restricted spaces or on sites containing closely spaced targets. The detector is fully waterproof to five metres and weighs approximately 1.2 kg.

The Simplex Lite does not include Bluetooth audio, recovery-speed adjustment or the advanced tone controls found on the Simplex Ultra. Nevertheless, it provides a strong combination of control, low weight and waterproof construction for an entry-level machine.

Best for: Beginners wanting an affordable detector with room to learn and progress.

Nokta Simplex Ultra

The Simplex Ultra is the most advanced model in the Simplex range. It operates at 15 kHz and includes six search modes: Field, Park, 4 Tone, 99 Tone, Beach and All Metal.

The 4 Tone and 99 Tone modes provide more detailed audio than the Lite and BT models. Adjustable Tone Break, Tone Frequency and Tone Volume allow the audio response to be personalised further.

The Ultra also adds adjustable recovery speed, helping separate targets that are positioned close together. Its Coin and Artefact ID Scale provides an additional visual guide, while Target ID Depth helps show target numbers at greater detection depth.

A fully carbon-fibre shaft, Bluetooth audio, 11-inch SX28 coil and five-metre waterproof rating complete the package. These features make the Ultra better suited to regular use and more challenging inland sites than the other Simplex models.

It remains a single-frequency detector, so those regularly detecting saltwater beaches may benefit from moving to a simultaneous multi-frequency Score model.

Nokta Score

The Score is Nokta’s most straightforward simultaneous multi-frequency detector. It can operate using simultaneous multi-frequency or at 15 kHz and includes Park, Field and Beach search modes.

Its simplified controls are designed to provide turn-on-and-go operation. Five sensitivity levels, automatic noise cancellation and fixed preset settings reduce the amount of initial adjustment required.

The detector provides 60 Target IDs, harmonic audio, vibration, a backlit display and a built-in flashlight. It weighs approximately 1.2 kg and is fully waterproof to five metres.

The Score includes the SC30 12 × 9-inch coil, which offers good ground coverage for fields and beaches. Its simultaneous multi-frequency operation makes it a particularly accessible option for wet sand and saltwater conditions.

The main limitations are the lack of adjustable recovery speed and custom user profiles. Detectorists wanting greater control should consider the Double Score or Triple Score.

Nokta Double Score

The Double Score builds on the standard Score by adding settings that allow the detector to be adapted to more demanding ground.

It uses simultaneous multi-frequency technology with a selectable 15 kHz option and includes Park, Field and Beach modes. Sensitivity is increased from five to 10 levels, while recovery speed can be adjusted across three levels.

The Double Score does not include the extensive tone choices, wireless headphones, two-coil package or Relic mode found on the Triple Score. However, it provides a useful middle ground for detectorists who want multi-frequency performance with greater adjustment.

Nokta Triple Score

The Triple Score is the most advanced model in the Score range. It offers simultaneous multi-frequency operation alongside selectable single frequencies of 4, 15 and 20 kHz.

Four search modes are included: Park, Field, Beach and Relic. Its Relic mode is designed for historic sites and provides an additional option for detectorists searching fields containing mixed targets and iron contamination.

Recovery speed can be adjusted across five levels, while 15 sensitivity levels provide finer control than the Score and Double Score. Three custom user profiles allow preferred settings to be saved.

The Triple Score also introduces selectable 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 60 and Pitch tone options. Iron volume, Tone Break and bottle-cap rejection can also be adjusted.

The Pro Pack includes the SC30 12 × 9-inch coil, the smaller SC24 9.5 × 6-inch coil and Bluetooth headphones. The smaller coil is particularly useful for restricted spaces and target-filled ground.

Best for: Detectorists wanting a well-equipped multi-frequency package with two coils and wireless headphones.

Nokta Legend 2

The Legend 2 is Nokta’s most advanced general-purpose metal detector. It offers simultaneous multi-frequency operation alongside selectable frequencies of 4, 10, 15, 20 and 40 kHz.

Its five search modes are Park, Field, Beach, Relic and Gold. Each mode includes a factory profile and three custom profiles, providing a total of up to 15 user-configurable profiles.

The Target ID scale has been expanded to 99 IDs, providing greater resolution than the 60-ID scale used by the Score range. Seven harmonic tone options, adjustable tone frequencies and extensive audio controls allow signals to be interpreted and personalised in greater detail.

Other advanced features include adjustable recovery speed, FerroCheck, Iron Filter, Ground Suppressor, bottle-cap rejection, automatic noise cancellation and several discrimination patterns. Target ID is also displayed while using Pinpoint mode.

Despite its extensive features, the Legend 2 weighs approximately 1.2 kg. It has a carbon-fibre shaft, a high-capacity 6700 mAh battery, wireless firmware updates and low-latency Bluetooth audio. It is fully waterproof to five metres.

The standard package includes both the LD28 11-inch coil and smaller LD21 8 × 5.5-inch coil. This provides a useful choice between general ground coverage and improved handling on contaminated or restricted sites.

Best for: Experienced detectorists wanting Nokta’s highest level of all-terrain performance and adjustment.

Understanding the Nokta Range

FINDX Pro or Simplex Lite?

The FINDX Pro is the simpler package. Its automatic modes, limited settings and included accessories make it suitable for someone who wants to begin detecting immediately.

The Simplex Lite offers significantly more adjustment, including 30 sensitivity levels, ground balance and frequency shift. It is the stronger choice for someone who wants an entry-level machine that provides more opportunity to learn.

Choose the FINDX Pro for the simplest complete package. Choose the Simplex Lite for greater control and longer-term progression.

Simplex Lite, BT or Ultra?

The Simplex Lite provides the core performance of the range at the lowest price. Its smaller coil is easy to handle, but it does not include Bluetooth audio.

The Simplex BT adds wireless audio, a larger 11-inch coil and an additional Park profile. It is well suited to users who want more convenience without needing advanced controls.

The Simplex Ultra adds adjustable recovery speed, more detailed audio modes, Tone Break adjustment and a fully carbon-fibre shaft. It is the strongest option for regular inland detecting.

Simplex Ultra or Score?

The Simplex Ultra offers considerably more audio adjustment than the standard Score. It may be the better option for inland detectorists who enjoy adjusting settings and interpreting detailed audio.

The Score has simpler controls but introduces simultaneous multi-frequency technology. This makes it the more straightforward choice for users who regularly move between fields, parks and saltwater beaches.

Choose the Simplex Ultra for adjustable single-frequency inland performance. Choose the Score for easier all-terrain multi-frequency operation.

Score or Double Score?

The standard Score provides uncomplicated multi-frequency performance but offers relatively little adjustment. It is intended primarily as a turn-on-and-go machine.

The Double Score adds 10 sensitivity levels, three recovery-speed settings, manual and tracking ground balance, adjustable Iron Filter and two user profiles. These additions make it much easier to adapt the detector to difficult or contaminated ground.

For occasional detecting and maximum simplicity, the Score should be sufficient. For regular use, the Double Score provides a worthwhile increase in control.

Double Score or Triple Score?

The Double Score provides the essential adjustments needed for general field and beach detecting. It is lighter on settings and usually represents the lower-cost option.

The Triple Score adds Relic mode, selectable 4 and 20 kHz frequencies, five recovery-speed levels, 15 sensitivity levels and much more extensive audio adjustment. Its Pro Pack also includes two coils and Bluetooth headphones.

Choose the Double Score if you want an affordable and capable all-round machine. Choose the Triple Score if you want a more complete package with greater adjustment.

Triple Score or Legend 2?

The Triple Score provides strong multi-frequency performance without requiring the user to manage an extensive range of advanced settings. Its two-coil Pro Pack offers particularly good value.

The Legend 2 has more operating frequencies, an additional Gold mode, 99 Target IDs, up to 15 profiles and more advanced iron, audio and discrimination controls. It also provides FerroCheck and a larger-capacity battery.

The Triple Score is likely to suit detectorists who want strong performance with a relatively simple interface. The Legend 2 is the better option for experienced users who want finer control and more detailed target information.

Garrett ACE 200i

The Garrett ACE 200i is the most straightforward detector in Garrett’s current adult range. It operates at 6.5 kHz and includes three search modes: Zero Discrimination, Coins and Jewellery.

Its Digital Target ID scale runs from 0 to 99, providing a numerical indication of the detected target. Three audio tones help separate low, medium and high-conductivity targets, while the depth indicator provides an estimate of target depth.

The ACE 200i has four sensitivity settings and is supplied with a 6.5 × 9-inch concentric search coil. The coil is waterproof, but the control box must not be submerged.

Its controls are intentionally simple, although it does not include electronic pinpoint, notch discrimination or the additional sensitivity adjustment found on the ACE 300i.

Best for: Beginners wanting a simple and affordable Garrett detector.

Garrett ACE 300i

The ACE 300i offers greater adjustment and target control than the ACE 200i. It operates at 8 kHz and includes five search modes: Zero Discrimination, Jewellery, Custom, Artefacts and Coins.

Eight sensitivity settings provide finer control over depth and stability, while notch discrimination allows individual areas of the Target ID scale to be accepted or rejected. The Custom mode can be used to create and retain a preferred discrimination pattern.

The ACE 300i also adds electronic pinpoint, making it easier to locate a target accurately before digging. Its adjustable frequency helps reduce interference from nearby detectors or sources of electrical interference.

It is supplied with a 7 × 10-inch concentric search coil. As with the other traditional ACE machines, the coil is waterproof, but the control box is not.

Best for: Beginners wanting more adjustment and an electronic pinpoint function.

Garrett ACE 400i

The ACE 400i is the most advanced of Garrett’s traditional single-frequency ACE detectors. It operates at 10 kHz, providing greater sensitivity to smaller and lower-conductivity targets than the lower-frequency ACE models.

Five search modes are included: Zero Discrimination, Jewellery, Custom, Artefacts and Coins. It also provides eight sensitivity settings, notch discrimination, electronic pinpoint and adjustable frequency.

The main addition is Garrett’s Iron Audio feature. This allows discriminated iron targets to be heard, helping identify flat iron and other unwanted objects that can otherwise produce misleading signals.

The ACE 400i is supplied with a larger 8.5 × 11-inch DD coil. This provides greater ground coverage and generally handles mineralised or iron-contaminated ground better than the concentric coils supplied with the ACE 200i and 300i.

The search coil is waterproof, but the control box is not. It also remains a single-frequency detector, making the Apex or Vortex models more suitable for regular saltwater beach detecting.

Best for: Beginners and intermediate users wanting the strongest traditional ACE model.

Garrett ACE Apex

The ACE Apex is a considerable step up from the ACE 200i, 300i and 400i. Garrett’s Multi-Flex technology provides selectable single frequencies of 5, 10, 15 and 20 kHz, alongside simultaneous Multi-Frequency and Multi-Salt options.

Its six search modes cover Zero, Coins, US Coins, Jewellery, Artefacts and Custom. Multi-Frequency can be used for general detecting across different targets and ground conditions, while Multi-Salt is designed for more stable performance on wet sand and in saltwater environments.

Eight Iron Volume settings allow the volume of iron targets to be reduced without silencing them completely. The Apex also includes high-resolution ground balance, adjustable recovery speed, notch discrimination, Iron Audio and a rechargeable internal battery.

Built-in Z-Lynk provides Garrett’s low-latency wireless audio system. Wireless headphones are included with some packages, while other versions are sold with the detector and coil only.

The standard Apex uses the narrow 6 × 11-inch Viper DD coil. This provides a useful balance between ground coverage and target separation. A version with the larger 8.5 × 11-inch Raider coil is also available.

The coil is waterproof and the control box is weather-resistant, but the Apex is not designed to be fully submerged. Detectorists wanting a completely waterproof Garrett should consider one of the Vortex models.

Best for: Detectorists wanting a lightweight, versatile Garrett for fields, parks and beaches.

Garrett Vortex VX5

The Vortex VX5 is the entry model in Garrett’s Vortex range. It offers 13 kHz single-frequency operation and simultaneous Multi-Frequency.

Four search modes are included: Zero, Standard, US Coins and Custom. Its Target ID scale runs from 0 to 99, with 20 discrimination notches and high-resolution iron discrimination.

The VX5 uses three fixed audio tones and has a fixed recovery-speed setting. Iron Audio helps identify unwanted iron, while automatic ground balance, frequency-channel adjustment and electronic pinpoint provide control across different sites.

Unlike the ACE Apex, the complete Vortex detector is waterproof to five metres. It also includes a rechargeable battery, USB-C charging, a backlit display and a locking control system for underwater use.

The VX5 is supplied with an 8.5 × 11-inch Raider DD coil and weighs approximately 1.38 kg. It does not include Z-Lynk wireless audio, Multi-Salt or a dedicated Beach mode.

Best for: Detectorists wanting an accessible, fully waterproof multi-frequency Garrett.

Garrett Vortex VX7

The Vortex VX7 adds several important features to the VX5. Its frequency options include 5 kHz, 13 kHz, simultaneous Multi-Frequency and Multi-Salt.

Multi-Salt and a dedicated Beach mode make the VX7 considerably more suitable for wet sand and saltwater detecting than the VX5. Its five search modes are Zero, Standard, US Coins, Beach and Custom.

The VX7 uses a two-tier Target ID display when operating in Multi-Frequency. Separate ferrous and non-ferrous scales provide more information about the detected object than the single Target ID scale used by the VX5.

Recovery speed can be adjusted across two settings, while the user can choose between three and five target tones. Adjustable Iron Volume allows iron responses to be reduced without removing them completely.

Built-in Z-Lynk provides low-latency wireless audio with compatible Garrett headphones. The detector is fully waterproof to five metres and includes the 8.5 × 11-inch Raider DD coil.

Best for: Detectorists wanting a fully waterproof Garrett with Multi-Salt, wireless audio and improved target information.

Garrett Vortex VX9

The Vortex VX9 is the most advanced detector in the Vortex range. It offers five selectable single frequencies—5, 9, 13, 18 and 25 kHz—alongside simultaneous Multi-Frequency and Multi-Salt.

Seven search modes are included: Zero, Standard, US Coins, Thin Coins, Beach, Custom and Fast. Thin Coins mode is intended to improve the response from thin, low-conductivity coins, including hammered coins. Fast mode provides quicker separation on heavily contaminated sites or where targets are positioned closely together.

When operating in Multi-Frequency, the VX9 uses a three-tier Target ID display. Its separate scale for complex ferrous targets provides additional information to help identify iron and mixed signals.

Three recovery-speed settings allow the response to be adapted for depth or target separation. The VX9 also provides selectable three or five-tone audio, adjustable Iron Volume, bottle-cap rejection, Iron Boundary adjustment and high-resolution iron discrimination.

Like the VX7, it includes Garrett Z-Lynk wireless audio, a rechargeable battery and software updates. It is fully waterproof to five metres and is supplied with the 8.5 × 11-inch Raider DD coil.

ACE 200i or ACE 300i?

The ACE 200i offers the simplest controls and is suitable for someone beginning the hobby with a limited budget. Its three modes and four sensitivity settings keep operation straightforward.

The ACE 300i adds five search modes, eight sensitivity settings, notch discrimination, a Custom mode and electronic pinpoint. These additions provide greater control and make it the better long-term option.

Choose the ACE 200i for maximum simplicity. Choose the ACE 300i if you want more control and room to progress.

ACE 300i or ACE 400i?

Both machines provide five search modes, electronic pinpoint, eight sensitivity settings and notch discrimination.

The ACE 400i operates at a higher 10 kHz frequency, includes Iron Audio and is supplied with a larger DD coil. These additions make it better suited to regular field detecting and sites containing more iron.

The ACE 300i remains a capable beginner machine, while the ACE 400i is the stronger choice for detectorists wanting the best performance from the traditional ACE platform.

ACE 400i or ACE Apex?

The ACE 400i is a single-frequency detector with conventional controls and replaceable AA batteries. It is straightforward to operate and performs well on typical inland sites.

The Apex adds simultaneous multi-frequency, selectable single frequencies, Multi-Salt, adjustable recovery speed, ground balance, Iron Volume, a rechargeable battery and built-in Z-Lynk wireless audio.

Choose the ACE 400i for traditional and uncomplicated inland detecting. Choose the Apex for greater versatility across fields, parks and saltwater beaches.

ACE Apex or Vortex VX5?

Both detectors provide simultaneous multi-frequency operation, but they have different strengths.

The Apex is lighter, includes more single-frequency choices and provides Multi-Salt. However, only its coil is waterproof, and the control box cannot be submerged.

The VX5 is fully waterproof to five metres and uses Garrett’s newer Vortex platform. However, it lacks Multi-Salt, wireless audio and a dedicated Beach mode.

Choose the Apex for broader frequency flexibility and regular land use. Choose the VX5 if full waterproofing is the priority.

Vortex VX5 or VX7?

The VX5 provides the basic Vortex experience with 13 kHz, Multi-Frequency, four search modes and a single Target ID scale.

The VX7 adds 5 kHz, Multi-Salt, Beach mode, a two-tier Target ID display, adjustable recovery speed, Iron Volume and Z-Lynk wireless audio.

For occasional inland detecting, the VX5 provides the essential features. For beaches, wireless audio and greater target information, the VX7 is the more versatile choice.

Vortex VX7 or VX9?

The VX7 includes the main features most detectorists require, including Multi-Salt, Beach mode, wireless audio and a dual Target ID display.

The VX9 adds three more selectable single frequencies, Thin Coins mode, Fast mode, a three-tier Target ID display and a wider range of advanced adjustments. It also provides an additional recovery-speed setting.

Choose the VX7 for strong all-round performance with a simpler setup. Choose the VX9 for maximum adjustment, faster target separation and more detailed ferrous information.

XP DEUS Lite

The XP DEUS Lite provides the speed and lightweight construction of the original DEUS platform without the full-size remote control. The detector is operated through its wireless headphone controller, creating an extremely light and uncluttered setup.

Its operating frequencies depend on the search coil fitted. When paired with an X35 coil, the detector provides a broad selection of frequencies between approximately 3.7 and 27.7 kHz. Lower frequencies are useful for larger and more conductive targets, while higher settings can improve sensitivity to small or thin items.

The DEUS Lite is fast and responsive, making it particularly effective on cultivated fields and areas containing closely spaced targets. Its compact headphone controls are less convenient than a dedicated remote, however, and the platform does not provide simultaneous multi-frequency detection.

Best for: Detectorists wanting an exceptionally light, fast XP detector at a more accessible price.

XP ORX

The XP ORX combines wireless construction with a dedicated remote control and a deliberately simplified operating system. It is easier to navigate than the more advanced DEUS models while retaining useful adjustments for sensitivity, reactivity and ground balance.

Four factory search programs are provided: two designed for coins and general detecting and two intended for gold prospecting. Additional user slots allow preferred settings to be saved. The selectable frequency range depends on the coil fitted, with compatible high-frequency coils offering excellent sensitivity to very small and low-conductive targets.

The ORX performs particularly well on cultivated land, contaminated sites and difficult mineralised ground. It is not a simultaneous multi-frequency detector, however, so the newer ICON and DEUS II platforms generally provide a more versatile response across mixed targets and changing ground conditions.

Best for: Field detecting, small targets and detectorists who want a lightweight XP machine with a straightforward remote control.

XP ICON

The XP ICON introduces XP’s simultaneous multi-frequency technology in a lighter and more accessible package. Its Fast Multi Frequency system analyses multiple frequencies together, allowing the detector to respond effectively to a broad range of target sizes and conductivities without requiring the user to select one operating frequency.

The ICON includes three factory programs and three user-program slots. It also offers 4 kHz and 14 kHz selectable single-frequency operation when a specific frequency is preferred. Five reactivity levels, several tone options and adjustable ground balance provide useful control without making the interface unnecessarily complicated.

The detector is fully wireless and compatible with XP’s DEUS II FMF search coils and audio accessories. The coil and control unit can be submerged to five metres when the correct underwater equipment is used, making the ICON more suitable for wet conditions and shallow-water detecting than the ORX or DEUS Lite.

Best for: Detectorists wanting an easy-to-use, lightweight simultaneous multi-frequency XP detector.

XP ICON-X

The XP ICON-X builds on the standard ICON with additional search programs, greater frequency choice and finer control over the detector’s response. It is aimed at detectorists who want more adjustment than the ICON provides without moving to the complete DEUS II remote-control system.

Six factory programs and six user-program slots are available. In addition to simultaneous multi-frequency operation, the ICON-X provides selectable 4 kHz, 14 kHz and 28 kHz frequencies. The higher 28 kHz option can be particularly useful when concentrating on small, thin or relatively low-conductive targets.

Seven reactivity levels provide more precise control over target separation and depth, while the expanded audio settings allow the response to be tailored more closely to the user. A carbon-fibre middle stem also contributes to its exceptionally low overall weight.

Like the standard ICON, the ICON-X uses XP’s wireless FMF ecosystem and can be submerged to five metres with the appropriate underwater accessories.

Best for: Experienced detectorists wanting advanced FMF performance and extensive adjustment in an extremely light package.

XP DEUS II WS6 Master

The XP DEUS II WS6 Master uses the same FMF search-coil technology as the full DEUS II, but replaces the larger remote control with the compact WS6 wireless headphone module. The module can remain attached to the headphones or be mounted on the detector’s stem and used as a miniature controller.

Because target processing takes place within the search coil, a WS6 Master fitted with the same coil and equivalent settings can deliver the same underlying detection performance as a full DEUS II. The principal difference is the way the detector is controlled.

The smaller WS6 display makes detailed adjustments and target information less convenient to view. It also lacks the full remote’s 20-metre waterproof construction, so it is better suited to land and wet-weather detecting than complete underwater use.

Its extremely low weight and compact design make the WS6 Master an excellent choice for detectorists who value comfort and portability but still want DEUS II FMF performance.

Best for: Detectorists wanting DEUS II performance in the lightest and most compact possible configuration.

XP DEUS II

The XP DEUS II is the most advanced general-purpose detector in the XP range. Its FMF technology processes multiple frequencies simultaneously, while a wide selection of single frequencies allows the detector to be configured for more specialised searches.

The full remote provides 12 factory programs and 12 user-program slots, together with extensive control over discrimination, tones, audio response, reactivity, ground balance, notching and target information. Its larger display makes these adjustments considerably easier to access than on the WS6 Master.

The DEUS II is designed for use across fields, pasture, contaminated ground, beaches and underwater environments. The remote and compatible FMF coils can be submerged to 20 metres when used with the correct underwater aerial and audio equipment.

Advanced audio processing and rapid target separation help the DEUS II distinguish desirable targets in iron-contaminated ground. It offers the greatest flexibility in the XP range, although its extensive settings require more time to understand than those of the ICON or ORX.

Best for: Experienced detectorists wanting XP’s most versatile controls, comprehensive target information and full underwater capability.

XP DEUS Lite or XP ORX?

The DEUS Lite is the lighter and more compact option, but its headphone-based controls have a small display and are less convenient to adjust. The ORX includes a dedicated remote with a clearer interface, simple coin and gold programs and easier access to its main settings.

Choose the DEUS Lite if minimum weight and the original DEUS response are your priorities. Choose the ORX if you want a more approachable detector with a conventional control screen.

XP ORX or XP ICON?

The ORX uses selectable single-frequency technology, while the ICON introduces simultaneous multi-frequency detection. This gives the ICON broader general-purpose performance when searching for targets with different sizes and conductivities.

The ICON also provides greater suitability for beaches, wet conditions and shallow-water use. The ORX remains an attractive option for inland detecting, mineralised ground and small targets, particularly when paired with one of XP’s high-frequency coils.

XP ICON or XP ICON-X?

Both detectors use the same FMF platform and wireless XP ecosystem. The standard ICON is the simpler machine, with fewer programs and a more focused collection of adjustments.

The ICON-X adds more factory and user programs, a 28 kHz selectable frequency, finer discrimination adjustment, additional reactivity levels and more extensive audio control. Choose the ICON for simplicity or the ICON-X if you expect to make detailed adjustments for different sites.

XP ICON-X or XP DEUS II WS6 Master?

The ICON-X provides a more conventional on-stem display and a carefully selected set of advanced controls. The DEUS II WS6 Master offers access to the DEUS II platform in an even lighter configuration, but its small controller is less convenient for viewing information and changing detailed settings.

The ICON-X is likely to suit detectorists who want a clear interface and substantial adjustment. The WS6 Master is better for those who prioritise minimum weight and want to enter the DEUS II system.

XP DEUS II WS6 Master or Full XP DEUS II?

When used with the same coil and equivalent settings, both configurations share the same underlying FMF detection technology. The difference is primarily the controller.

The WS6 Master is lighter and less expensive, while the full DEUS II remote provides a larger display, quicker access to advanced settings and complete waterproofing to 20 metres. The full version is the stronger choice for underwater detecting and users who regularly adjust complex programs.
